are telling me they don't want to walk back into that building. >>> the benghazi breakdown, the scathing findings of an independent investigation blames the state department from top to bottom. >> mistakes were made, lives were lost, and lessons need to be learned. >> there's no question that there were people within the state department that were remiss and did not execute in an appropriate way. >>> what will be the fallout for secretary of state hillary clinton? >>> and spidy senses activate, how did president obama get caught in the hero's web? >>> good day, i'm andrea mitchell live in washington. president obama has just held a mini news conference announcing a task force on guns led by joe biden and the state of negotiations which seem to be stalling over the fiscal cliff. joining me, managing editor of postpolitics.com. it was called to discuss the gun task force, but clearly the president wanted to send a signal about the state of play with john boehner and the state of play is that it is not good. >> you know, andrea, i agree broadly with you, although i would say the president d

the president for the benghazi attack, they would try to get instead after the election by attacking susan rice for the benghazi attack. they attacked her specifically for going on sunday morning talk shows after the attack and delivering the administration's talking points about what was believed to have happened there. it later emerged that those talking points were exactly what the intelligence agencies told the administration they should say about the attack. senator mccain described that as the worst cover-up he had ever seen in his life. he said it was worse than watergate. he said that that susan rice, she's not very bright. actually used that phrase about her, "not very bright." part of the reason susan rice became such a high-profile potential nominee was because of that criticism from republican senators. more than that, it ended up becoming a very high-profile potential nomination because of the president's response to that republican criticism. >> let me say specifically about susan rice, she has done exemplary work. she has represented the united states and our interests in the uni

to explain she didn't stop an attack on benghazi? >> they obviously decided it wasn't. i'm not sure why. >> on the politics, your former colleague wrote about this, if white house operatives really believe because hagel is a republican former senator and the gop already got its scalp, hawks would look the other way while the administration nominated a man likely to oppose against iran? those white house operatives should seek a different line of work. joy reid? >> the neocons won't stop. they've been wrong on every foreign policy question of my lifetime and still want to be in charge. >> to think of another liberal-type reformer you have to go to harold brown under carter and was a multilateralist, looked to use the pentagon as a place to negotiate arms reduction treaties. it was a different type of defense strategy, it was, by the way, controversial at the time. but the point to hagel, joy, is we're talking about someone who objectionable comments aside or not, someone who would be a change agent, and why won't the president fight for that? >> his only objectionable comment was his com

this political capital on what is going to be an interminutable benghazi investigation. john mccain signaling he wants to go on the foreign relations committee, he was going to lead the way. >> let's get this from chuck as well. do you think that clinton, secretary clinton or former president clinton, they have done this i know in private, said what they thought about this, they were for kerry. did they ever express that for lobby for kerry or against rice in this case do you know? >> it's my understanding they didn't. i think that hillary clinton understood where the president's loyalties lie, that he was leaning towards susan rice and she wasn't going to start a debate and try to -- and i think, in fact, those close to secretary clinton really tried to snuff out those stories that secretary clinton wanted kerry over rice, didn't want to have rice replace her. i think she stayed out of that a lot. so i don't think that they were going to step into that at all. i mean, i know there's always been speculation that susan rice and secretary clinton weren't close, and it all -- some of that all goes
